Why Underinsured Motorist Coverage is Important

Posted by Yari Lawson | Mar 04, 2022 | 0 Comments

Previously, we discussed how the insurance carrier for an at fault driver involved in a car accident in Georgia is responsible for covering the injuries, pain and suffering, and even wage loss caused by that at fault driver's negligence.  In some situations, the injuries that an innocent victim suffers in a car accident are so serious that the medical bills exceed the maximum policy limits available on the insurance coverage of the driver responsible for the accident.

For instance, a driver responsible for a car accident may only have a maximum insurance policy limit of $25,000.00, which would cover the medical injuries of a single victim injured in a car accident.  Let's also say in that same accident, you are injured and you have accrued $50,000.00 in medical bills.  Legally,  once the insurance carrier for the driver responsible for the car accident pays their full $25,000.00 policy limit, you may wonder: do you have any other options to have your remaining medical bills covered?

Yes.  In Georgia, you can contract for Underinsured Motorist Coverage that will stand in place of the at fault driver's insurance, in essence.  Usually, most insurance companies will allow you to contract for underinsured motorist coverage in amount equal to your liability coverage.

So for instance, if you have a liability policy that has $25,000.00 policy limit and you have contracted for $25,000 in underinsured motorist coverage, your insurance company can now be notified that your underinsured motorist coverage of $25,000.00 can be triggered to pay the $25,000.00 of medical bills unpaid in the example provided in paragraph two.
